The specialty was formed with the support of the Italian cultural center, which used to support the eligible study of the language before the establishment of the specialty. The collaboration with the universities in Venice and Florence also provided for the forming of the new specialty. In 2008 Letizia Moratti (mayor of Milan) received the dignity doctor honoris causa at the Plovdiv University Paisii Hilendarski. The same title was given before that to Italians Carlo Ancelotti (football coach) and prof. Giovanni Stanchelinni.

The qualification provided after graduating the specialty allows the graduates to practice teaching, scientific and methodical, organizational and management activities in the field of education. The graduates receive an educational degree bachelor with professional qualification ”teacher in Bulgarian language and literature and Italian language and literature” in the system of education.

Various opportunities for continuing the education for higher educational degrees are available – there is a wide aspect of master and PhD programs in different humanitarian spheres. The schooling in both languages provides wide perspectives for professional realization in the fields of translating and interpreting, media and consulting.
