The specialty “Theology” at the Plovdiv University is one of the educational programs at the department of Theology at the Faculty of History and Philosophy. It stimulates the revival of the spiritual life at the region and contributes to the inter cultural, inter ethnic and inter religious coexistence at the region.
Orthodox theology includes four main sections: biblical, historical, systematic and practical. During the four years bachelor course, fundamental theological disciplines are studied, along with historical and philosophical. The first two years students have the opportunity to attend lectures in classical languages – Hebraic, Greek, Latin, Old Church Slavonic, Russian and western languages. Among the other disciplines, music, biblical and church archeology, rhetorics and other disciplines which form wide theological, historical and philosophic culture at the students are studied.
The specialty includes module of pedagogical disciplines, which give the students opportunity for receiving pedagogical certification.
The graduates could continue their education in humanitarian master and PhD programs, find their profession realization in the Bulgarian Orthodox Church as clerics or church functionaries, teaching religion in the school system or being involved in activities in the social sphere and media, or even teaching in theological faculties and seminary's.
The seminary's in Russia, Serbia, Greece, and Romania and many European universities annually provide scholarships for students and PhD. students.
