The specialty “Biology and environmental preservation” is innovative for the affiliated college “Lyuben Karavelov” in Kardzali and is unique for the Plovdiv University Paisii Hilendarski. It's establishment correspondents with the nowadays ecological problems invoked from the anthropological factors. These issues are connected to various components of the environment, which led to expanding necessity for new type of specialists with good theoretical and practical training in the structure and functioning of the environment.

The specific of the bachelor program “Biology and environmental preservation” provides knowledge and competences in two main directions: fundamental biological disciplines and additional profiling disciplines for professional and practical competences. This way, students gain wide knowledge in the field of biology, ecology and environmental preservation. During the study, students also gain knowledge about basic biological structures and processes, learn about methods and approaches for study of living systems. Students also gain solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the fields of nature sciences such as botanics, zoology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics and others. Future specialists also learn about fundamental scientific disciplines from the field of ecology, health care, environment and its components, contemporary technologies for treatment and refining of fluids; the state of climate and water resources, soil and air; methods and criteria for evaluation the state of environment, methods for biological monitoring, as well as a the Bulgarian and international law in the field of ecology.

Students education in the specialty “Biology and environmental preservation” is done through established study documentation and in accordance to the European system for credit transfer. The study process is provided through sufficient amount of highly qualified lecturers, mostly from the Faculty of Biology at the Plovdiv University. The affiliated college in Kardzali provides the students with the necessary conditions for auditory and practical work – students halls and specialized laboratories as well as natural environment for practical work.

Bachelors in Biology have competences in the field of environmental preservation and have opportunities for professional realization in all spheres dealing with environmental preservation issues, enrichment and propagation of the environment – various scientific and research institutes at the BSA and various agricultural institutes, training and production laboratories, firms developing ecological analysis, at municipalities and local authorities as experts in ecology and environmental preservation, as well as at state institutions dealing with health care, ecology and education.
